Mapping a bright future for world disasters.
A group of Year 10 GCSE Geography students put their studies to good use recently, learning how maps can be used to respond to a natural disaster.  The Restless Earth workshop was organised by The British Cartographic Society together with the Royal Geographical Society and ESRI.

30 of our Year 10 GCSE Geography students spent the afternoon working as a team to create a summary map for use in the disaster area.   Each student had a role to play: The military; Search and rescue teams; Medical; Humanitarian aid; and Coordination and mapping team.  They used both paper and digital resources to help them create their map. The focus was the earthquake disaster in Japan in 2011. This is what our students had to say - "We thought the mapping exercise was very useful and realised that maps are more than just a tool to find places, they have meaning and useful qualities".
