Last week, a small group of 12 Health and Social Care students had the wonderful opportunity of visiting the Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children. It was an amazing experience for us all. It is a small school with around 40 members of staff and 30 students. The school employs a mixture of deaf and hearing members of staff and each classroom has a 50/50 split of staff that hearing and deaf. This is to ensure that the students are receiving 100% support in their language abilities – both English language as well as BSL. The students have access to a very comprehensive curriculum tailored to their needs and as a result make great progress. We really enjoyed engaging with some of the students in their lessons and we even learnt how to sign a couple of words.
