The Future of Fashion
On Saturday the 19th of March two of A level Textiles students, Tifany and Reianne, attended the F.A.D Fashion Futures Awards programme on ‘Jury Day’. The participants, all from schools and colleges in Hackney and Lewisham, took part in a 9 week program where they had to design and make a garment inspired by South East Asia.
The course started with a research trip to the V&A where students gathered most of their inspiration. Several interesting workshops followed where students took part in sessions that included: Draping on the stand, pattern cutting, screen printing and learning how to use an industrial sewing machine.
The workshops all led up to to the participants presenting their chosen design idea to the ‘Jury’; a group of industry professionals including: May Martin a Textiles Tutor and TV Presenter on The Great British Sewing Bee, Khairunisa Suhail a Designer at George @ Asda, Carole Robb a Talent Specialist at Vohs&Co Fashion Retail Recruitment, Vanessa Spence a Womenswear Design Director at ASOS.com, Phil Northey, Chair at RBS London Regional Board and Joanne Matthews from F.A.D.
The students presented their ideas confidently to the jury who all seemed really impressed with the body of work they had on display.
